In 2023, one one-year-old and one three-year-old child died as a result of physical abuse. In total, the 19 reporting children's hospitals treated 2097 children for maltreatment. This is an increase of eleven percent compared to 2022.
The rise is mainly due to an increase in reports of psychological abuse as a result of witnessing domestic violence, according to the Child Protection Section of the Swiss Children's Hospitals on Monday. These reports increased by 64 percent.
Of the total number of cases reported, 552 involved physical abuse. Psychological abuse was suffered by 665 children and young people up to the age of 17, 588 were neglected. 271 children were victims of sexual abuse. The clinics registered Munchausen's syndrome 20 times.
The specialist group does not believe that the reason for the increase in all categories is a real increase in child suffering, but rather better recording and reporting behavior.
