Switzerland has chosen Geneva as the venue for the planned peace summit on Ukraine. This was revealed to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday on the fringes of the World Economic Forum (WEF) by a source from the Federal Administration who is familiar with the dossier.
The two countries have already started work on the meeting, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday at the WEF in Davos GR. The exact modalities, in particular the date, have not yet been determined.
Switzerland is organizing the peace summit at Ukraine's request, as the two countries announced on Monday on the occasion of Zelenskyi's visit to the Federal Council in Bern. President Viola Amherd said that she and Zelenskyi hoped for broad support and as many participants as possible. The countries of the Global South and China should also be represented.
However, Russia is not welcome. On Sunday, over 80 states and organizations discussed the Ukrainian peace formula for an end to the war in Davos. The Kremlin described the talks as useless because Russia was not present.
Conference on demining also held in Geneva
Selensky's ten-point plan, known as the peace formula, envisages a complete Russian withdrawal from Ukraine, reparations and the punishment of war criminals. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for almost two years with Western help. Almost a fifth of Ukraine's territory is under Russian control.
An international conference on humanitarian demining in Ukraine will take place in Geneva in October. A few months ago, the Federal Council decided to make CHF 100 million available to help clear around 156,000 square kilometers of potentially mined land in Ukraine.
