The Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) wants Switzerland to convene a conference of states parties to the Geneva Conventions. In a resolution on Friday, the body also called for an arms embargo against Israel and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The Human Rights Council adopted the text by 28 votes to 6 with 13 abstentions. Among other things, the text calls on the UN General Assembly to recommend that Switzerland convene a meeting of the signatory states to the Geneva Conventions.
In addition to an arms embargo, the text of the resolution also calls for a report on previous arms deliveries to Israel. Israel, for its part, condemned the resolution. This was "a vote for Hamas".
Possible further steps depend on how the General Assembly responds to the request, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry.
