UN wishes to continue contribution to Palestinian relief organization

The UN is concerned about the National Council's decision to cancel Swiss funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, expressed the wish on Wednesday in Geneva that the annual contribution of CHF 20 million be continued.
Grandi explained that without support, the Palestinians would be even more disadvantaged.
On Monday, the National Council adopted a motion by David Zuberbühler (SVP/AR), who was of the opinion that UNRWA, with its almost 30,000 employees, was not objective enough to work in the region. The National Council approved the motion to cut CHF 20 million by 116 votes to 78. The Council of States will deal with the matter on Thursday.
