The 2025 budget for the canton of Valais envisages a revenue surplus of CHF 1.4 million on expenditure of CHF 4.54 billion. The government wants to spend more money in areas with rapidly rising costs, namely in the areas of health, natural hazards, higher and special schools, IT and digitalization.

The budget also includes measures in favor of nursing and teaching staff, the canton of Valais announced on Tuesday. In addition, the population should continue to benefit from the tax revision for natural persons in 2025.

In order to achieve a balanced budget, the cantonal government has taken several measures. Among other things, the State Council intends to refrain from creating new jobs and from compensating salaries for inflation. The government also wants to limit the increase in personnel costs and postpone several projects.

Overall, the canton of Valais is budgeting investments in the region of CHF 622.5 million. This is CHF 64.6 million or 11.6 percent higher than the 2023 annual accounts.

In addition, the canton pays non-investment contributions of CHF 1.79 billion to local authorities and third parties. This corresponds to an increase of CHF 51.4 million or 3% compared to the 2024 budget.

The State Council also points out that the budget planning took place in a tense environment due to the consequences of the storms last June and July. "These severe weather events will have a significant impact on expenditure in the 2024 annual accounts," the press release states.
