Valais State Councillor Christophe Darbellay (center) would like to run for a third term in the cantonal elections in 2025. His nomination will be put to the vote at the Lower Valais Central Congress in December.
The 53-year-old Darbellay was a National Councillor for twelve years, President of the Swiss CVP for ten years and a State Councillor for eight years, the Martigny-Combe section of the party announced on Wednesday. They enthusiastically support his candidacy.
The other four members of the government had already announced their intentions. At the beginning of October, the SVP Upper Valais sent State Councillor Franz Ruppen into the race. In May, State Councillor Mathias Reynard announced his willingness to run for re-election. The Social Democrat declared that he was "at the disposal of his party" to run for a second term of office.
In mid-October, Frédéric Favre (FDP) and Roberto Schmidt (center) announced that they would not be running for a third term in the cantonal executive. The new elections for the five-member cantonal government of Valais will take place next March 2. The cantonal parliament will also be re-elected at the same time.
