The 55th edition of the Visions du Réel documentary film festival begins on April 12 in Nyon VD. There will be 165 films from 50 countries on show, including a large number of Swiss productions. The filmmakers Jia Zhang-Ke and Alice Diop will also be holding masterclasses.

25 Swiss productions and co-productions will be shown at the 55th Visions du Réel, as announced by the festival organizers. Among them is Nicole Vögele's "The Landscape and the Fury". The film is set on the Bosnian-Croatian border and explores questions of home, violence and coincidence. It will be screened in the International Feature Film Competition section.

Prizes in the National Competition and Audience Award categories will also be awarded during the festival. A total of 87 other world premieres and 14 international premieres will be screened at the festival, according to the festival organizers.

Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke, French director Alice Diop and US filmmaker John Wilson will be "top-class guests" at the festival, according to the organizers. Zhang-Ke will receive the honorary prize at the festival, which will show twelve of his films. Diop will hold a master class, while Wilson will take part in a public discussion and show episodes from his series "How To with John Wilson", among other things.

In the spirit of inclusion

This year's festival is all about "inclusivity and accessibility for as many people as possible", the organizers wrote in a press release. On the one hand, there are two "Relax" screenings, where the audience is invited to move and express themselves freely.

Secondly, the masterclasses are free of charge and Diop's will be translated into sign language. Around 50 films will also be available online. The online offering was established in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The festival runs from April 12 to 21. The opening film is the Danish production "As the Tide Comes", directed by Juan Palacios and co-directed by Sofie Husum Johannesen. Half of the films in this year's edition are by women, as the organizers wrote.
