The Canton of Vaud is stepping up its efforts to meet its climate goals. It has allocated 209 million Swiss francs for a package of around 20 measures to be implemented by spring 2024. The Canton of Vaud has set itself the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 60 percent compared to 1990 by 2030, and becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Without additional measures, however, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions would only be around eight percent by 2030, according to a report by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). The new measures announced on Wednesday will be integrated into the next Canton of Vaud Climate Plan, which is due to come into force in spring 2024. 15 million francs are earmarked for biodiversity, 17.5 million for the protection of water resources and soils, and 18.1 million for the installation of photovoltaic systems on state buildings to achieve energy autonomy by 2035. Other measures include training young people for the jobs of tomorrow, supporting businesses in the energy transition, and encouraging the shift of goods transport from road to rail. One particularly citizen-friendly idea is the 50 percent discount on subscriptions for the Canton of Vaud tariff system for those under 25 and pensioners from 2025. "We must find the right balance between awareness and compulsion. We want to work with people, not against them, to advance climate issues," said Government President Christelle Luisier (FDP).
