Waadtländer SP-Man Maillard Elected to the Council of States on the First Ballot

In the canton of Vaud, SP politician Pierre-Yves Maillard was elected to the Council of States in the first round of voting on Sunday, with 52.30% of the vote. His former colleague in the Vaud government, FDP man Pascal Broulis, came in second with 43.2% of the vote and will face a second round of voting on November 12th. SVP National Council member Michaël Buffat, who was running on the same ticket as Broulis, fared much worse with 26.96% of the vote. In the second round, Broulis will be running alone for the Alliance Vaudoise, with the Green Raphaël Mahaim (24.68%) likely to be his biggest challenger. The other eight candidates, including the Green-Liberal Céline Weber (13.47%), were far behind.
