The President of the Swiss Association of General Practitioners and Paediatricians, Philippe Luchsinger, has warned of the serious consequences of the shortage of skilled personnel in the health sector. He has called for more training places, as there are not enough doctors to meet the needs of hospitals and practices. He believes that in the next two to three years, there will be massive problems, with people having to wait several months for an appointment with a GP or specialist. This will lead to triage, with patients with less serious illnesses being turned away due to lack of time. There are also shortages of doctors in specialised areas such as cardiology and radiology, and even in general surgery and gynaecology. Luchsinger believes that the problem has been caused by the limited number of study places, which at 1350 are not enough to meet the demand. He believes that it is up to the cantons to provide more study places.
