German Economics Minister Robert Habeck does not expect the attacks by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea to cause any major supply chain problems for the economy. The Houthis have been attacking ships with drones and missiles for weeks.

"So there are already delays in the supply chain because the ships are now traveling the long way around Africa," said the Green politician on Tuesday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum WEF in Davos. But this is something we can adjust to. "Everyone tells me that things will settle down again," said Habeck. Transport costs do not play such a big role that there will be massive problems.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked ships with an alleged Israeli connection in the Red Sea. The USA and the UK responded with attacks on targets in Yemen. Major shipping companies are now increasingly avoiding the Red Sea route, which actually accounts for around ten percent of global trade.
