The mass vaccination against the polio virus in the Gaza Strip has officially begun. This was confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. "The vaccination campaign has started," said a spokeswoman. It is being carried out by the local health authorities, the UN Children's Fund Unicef and the UN Palestinian Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The Ministry of Health in Gaza also confirmed the start of the vaccination campaign.
According to the WHO, the Israeli army had promised temporary and localized pauses in fighting to ensure the safety of staff and families who come to the vaccination centers with their children. According to the WHO, mobile vaccination teams are also on the road to reach families who are unable to go to the vaccination centers.
The aim is to vaccinate 640,000 children under the age of ten. The campaign is intended to prevent the polio virus from spreading after the first case of polio in 25 years was recently detected in the embattled Palestinian territory.
