A 48-year-old woman from St. Gallen is to stand trial for alleged murder at Lucerne Criminal Court today, Wednesday. She is alleged to have killed her mother by strangulation and blunt force trauma in her home in April 2020.

In addition to killing her mother, the defendant is accused of attempted murder, as stated in the indictment on Wednesday. In January of the same year, she allegedly planned and carried out a poisoning attack on her mother by pouring ethylene glycol - an antifreeze - into coffee cups she had brought with her.

The mother survived the poisoning thanks to rapid medical treatment, but suffered severe acidosis, acute kidney failure, pneumonia and several other consequential injuries.

According to the indictment, the motive for the murder was the mother's decision to stop supporting her daughter financially for many years. The accused had felt controlled and bullied by her mother for years. After the attempted poisoning, the well-heeled mother disinherited her daughter and instead appointed her grandson as her sole heir.

A friend of the main accused has also been charged. She is accused of abetting and violating the Weapons Act. She is alleged to have accompanied the main accused to the scene of the crime and then deliberately destroyed evidence.
