The currently largest iceberg in the world is moving comparatively quickly away from Antarctic waters. This was announced by the European Space Agency Esa on Friday, citing satellite images.

The colossus, known as A23a, broke away from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf back in 1986, but was stuck on the seabed for a long time. Although it had broken free by 2020, it is only now that it is spurred on by winds and currents.

A23a is around 4000 square kilometers in size, i.e. around a tenth of the size of Switzerland. Like most icebergs from the so-called Weddell sector, it will probably end up in the South Atlantic, according to Esa.
