Zurich Airport handled significantly more passengers in June 2024 than in the same month last year. However, in contrast to May, the pre-crisis level of 2019 was not exceeded.
In June, 2.81 million people traveled through Zurich Airport, as reported on Wednesday evening. This is an increase of 8 percent compared to the previous year. Compared to the pre-pandemic level (June 2019), this corresponds to a level of 97%.
Of these passengers, 1.96 million were local passengers departing from or arriving in Zurich. At 0.84 million, the number of transfer passengers accounted for around 30 percent.
More flights
More aircraft also landed or took off in Zurich in June than in the same month last year. The number of aircraft movements rose by 4 percent to 23,590, reaching 95 percent of the number of aircraft movements in June 2019.
On average, 137 passengers were seated on an aircraft. This is 1.0% more than in June 2023. Seat occupancy remained stable compared to the previous year at 82%.
Commercial sales increase slightly more strongly airside
Commercial sales increased by 6.9% to CHF 57.0 million in the month under review. The stores and restaurants on the "airside" (after the security checkpoint) benefited somewhat more from passengers' desire to buy, with an increase of 7.2%, than the stores on the "landside" (6.4%).
The airport also handled 37,453 tons of freight in June. This corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the same month last year. Compared to June 2019, i.e. before coronavirus, 2% more freight was transported.
