Zurich artist Hermann Alfred Sigg dies at the age of 99

The Swiss artist Hermann Alfred Sigg has died at the age of 99. Landscapes played a central role in the paintings of the Zurich-born artist.
Sigg died on November 17, according to obituaries in several newspapers. Born on June 29, 1924, Sigg grew up on his parents' farm in Oberhasli ZH. He studied at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts under Johannes Itten, Carl Fischer, Otto Morach and Ernst Gubler, among others. A further stage in his education was Paris.
After his training, he initially created figure paintings and landscapes with a cubist touch. In the early years, the motifs of horse racing, herds of animals and flocks of birds were in the foreground. He worked as a graphic artist, drawing teacher and stage designer, among other things. Friendly contacts with important art collectors also brought him a number of private commissions.
After 1968, Sigg undertook numerous trips to India, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Java, Bali, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. The view of the earth from an airplane led Sigg to a new artistic perspective. Sigg began creating wooden sculptures in 1994. Sigg was awarded the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Prize in 1949 and the Swiss Sports Journalists' Gold Medal in 1965.
