The Zurich public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into an alleged coronavirus fraudster. The businessman is said to have pocketed tens of millions of euros during the pandemic for hundreds of thousands of coronavirus tests that apparently never took place.
As Tamedia newspapers reported on Thursday, there is suspicion of fraud, forgery of documents and money laundering. The Zurich public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the matter, as confirmed by the senior public prosecutor's office on Friday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. No further details could be provided.
According to the Tamedia report, the suspect is said to have organized a factoring system with which he was able to buy test lists from screening centers in order to claim the promised remuneration from the health insurance companies.
However, the insurers found out that the majority of the billed tests were not carried out, as Tamedia learned from an internal paper of a health insurance company. This is said to involve hundreds of thousands of corona tests, with which the man is said to have defrauded an unknown amount in the tens of millions.
According to the newspapers, the entrepreneur denies all allegations. The case is apparently one of the largest currently being investigated by a task force of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).
