The Zurich public prosecutor made serious accusations against the 62-year-old Flixbus driver in court on Wednesday. He said it was hard to believe that a professional driver had driven like that. He demanded a conditional prison sentence of two years.

The Italian driver testified that visibility on the Sihlhochstrasse was very poor, the public prosecutor quoted from the investigation at Zurich District Court on Wednesday. "Nevertheless, he was driving faster than all the cars", he stated.

The 62-year-old driver was truly sorry for what happened, the public prosecutor continued. However, the defendant himself had realized that his speed had been "somewhat high". According to the public prosecutor, the fatal accident could easily have been avoided - by adjusting his speed.

Termination in the event of delay

In the investigation, the accused alleged pressure from Flixbus. Delays could allegedly have resulted in dismissal. However, the bus had already started late in Milan after midnight. However, a call from the second chauffeur traveling with the bus to the head office, in which bad weather conditions were pointed out, did not change the time pressure.

According to the public prosecutor, the 62-year-old had been driving buses professionally since the 1980s. Two people died in the accident, including the second driver. Dozens were injured.
