Researchers from Zurich have developed a new method for predicting the individual response of cells to certain drugs. According to ETH Zurich, this knowledge of individual cell response is key to more effective cancer therapies. Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital Zurich have developed a new method based on machine learning, according to a statement released by ETH Zurich on Wednesday. The new method was presented in the journal Nature Methods. Our method can accurately describe and even predict how individual cells will respond to a disturbance, such as from a drug, instead of relying on average values of an entire cell population. This could lead to more precise therapies and diagnoses, according to Gunnar Rätsch, the lead researcher from ETH Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich. Researchers at a university have developed a new method that could potentially be used in clinical practice to predict the development of cancer. The method has been shown to provide accurate predictions, and the researchers have also demonstrated that it works on other disease-causing cells, such as those associated with the autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus. However, extensive clinical studies are still needed before the method can be used in clinical practice.
