Swiss Council of States significantly ramps up financial support for forest conservation, approving an additional CHF 100 million.
The responsible committee of the Council of States wants to allocate an additional CHF 100 million over the next four years for the protection of forests. It passed this motion to the plenary by 8 votes to 3 with 2 abstentions.
According to the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy Committee of the Council of States (Urek), the funds will be used to finance measures to adapt forests to climate change, as reported by the parliamentary services on Friday.
Parliament had already granted a temporary loan for the period 2020 to 2024. The Urek-N now wants to “create continuity”, as the Commission wrote. A minority rejected the increase for financial policy reasons.
According to the press release, there is agreement on the other loans with which the federal government is to support environmental protection measures by the cantons.
A total of 2.3 billion Swiss francs will be spent between 2025 and 2028, and the funds will be used to implement flood protection measures, revitalise bodies of water and carry out residual water remediation during this period.
