In a striking health trend, Swiss painkiller consumption saw a notable increase in 2022, with a record 36% of the population admitting to using pain relief medication. This Swiss Health Survey 2022 data highlights a significant shift from 1992, when only 12% reported taking painkillers. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) unveiled these insights, underscoring a broader pattern of escalating medication usage over the last three decades.

In the week preceding the survey, 55% of respondents had taken some form of medication, marking a substantial rise from the 38% recorded in 1992. The survey further revealed that women were more likely to take medication compared to men. Age also played a critical role, with medication intake peaking at 86% among individuals over 75 years old.

Despite the increased reliance on medication, a majority, 85%, still perceived their health as good or very good. Yet, nearly half the surveyed population experienced weakness (46%) and back pain (45%), indicating prevalent physical discomforts.

This uptrend in Swiss painkiller usage and overall medication intake mirrors a more profound societal and health landscape evolution, reflecting changes in health perceptions, treatment accessibility, and, possibly, the rising prevalence of health issues requiring medication.
