On average, Swiss pension funds achieved a positive performance in March for the third month this year. Since the beginning of the year, the increase has been almost 4%.

The 100 pension funds in the UBS sample achieved an average performance of 2.01% after deduction of fees in March 2024. Since the beginning of the year, the return has thus amounted to 3.94%, according to a press release issued by the bank on Wednesday. The increase was 1.32 percent in February and 0.48 percent in January.

The performance range was relatively wide at 2.51 percentage points in March. The best result (3.31%) in the UBS sample was achieved by a small pension fund with assets under management of less than CHF 300 million, the worst (0.80%) by a large pension fund with assets under management of over CHF 1 billion.

The average performance of all asset classes was positive in March. Measured in Swiss francs, global equities (5.18%) rose the most, followed by Swiss equities (3.89%). Direct investments in real estate (0.16%) and Swiss franc bonds (0.75%) were the weakest performers.

After the positive first quarter of 2024, pension funds are now back to around the same level of performance as at the start of 2022.
