An avalanche in Saas-Grund, Valais, turns fatal for a skier amidst a high-risk avalanche warning, marking the fifth such casualty in Switzerland this winter.
A skier was buried by an avalanche in Saas-Grund VS on Saturday. He died as a result, according to the Valais cantonal police on Sunday.
According to the police, the skier was on a slope traverse in the Kreuzboden-Hohsaas ski area. According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, five people have died in avalanches in Switzerland this winter.
It was not the only avalanche to hit the region on Saturday. After another avalanche in the Hohtälli area near Zermatt, a buried person was rescued from the masses of snow, as reported by Air-Zermatt. He remained uninjured. This person was skiing outside the marked pistes.
The SLF warned of a high avalanche danger in the Goms and Simplon region. This corresponds to the second-highest danger level. According to the avalanche warning service, there is a likelihood of spontaneous and often very large avalanches at this level. There is considerable avalanche danger in the rest of Valais.
