The municipality of Arbedo-Castione has filed a lawsuit against unknown persons following the manipulated ballot papers in the Ticino municipal elections on April 14. It has also justified this with the costs incurred for the elections.

The activities that led to the annulment of the elections carried out by “unknown persons outside the municipal administration”, the municipality stated in a communiqué sent out on Thursday.

The criminal complaint filed by the municipality is directed against unknown persons. They are accused of electoral fraud, vote-stealing and violating the secrecy of the ballot.

A cantonal counting office discovered irregularities when opening the ballot papers for the executive and legislative bodies of Arbedo-Castione during the municipal elections on April 14.

According to information from the Ticino public prosecutor’s office, around 50 ballot papers for the executive and some for the legislative were affected.

The cantonal audit office, which oversees the counting, subsequently discovered systematic manipulation of the ballot papers and declared the elections invalid.

The public prosecutor’s office arranged for the ballot papers to be confiscated on election day.
