The night into Thursday brought a winter blast to Switzerland. Large parts of the Central Plateau were covered in snow in the early morning, as pictures on news platforms showed. In many places, it initially continued to snow down to the lowlands.
The weather service Meteonews spoke of a “brief winter interlude” on X (formerly Twitter). Over the course of the day, the snow line rose sharply to around 1500.
Meteorologists had already warned of wintry road conditions and the risk of black ice on Wednesday. They advised people to allow more time for their commute to work and to check their cars for their winter suitability.
Due to the snowfall, the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), based in Davos GR, has raised the avalanche warning level for western Lower Valais to 4, the second-highest danger level: according to the experts, there is a high avalanche risk there. In large parts of the Alpine region, the avalanche danger is considerable, with a warning level of 3.
