Switzerland is taking over the leadership of the Kfor transport company in Kosovo. This is possible thanks to the increase in the Swisscoy contingent approved by parliament.

There are now 215 members of the armed forces deployed in Kosovo, twenty more than before.

The transfer from the 49th to the 50th Swisscoy contingent took place on Thursday, according to Swissint, the Armed Forces’ competence centre for international peacebuilding.

Switzerland took over command of the multinational transport company from Austria on March 9.

According to the press release, the takeover offers Switzerland the opportunity to strengthen its involvement in KFOR and support the mission in adapting to the changed security-related circumstances in the region.

Since 1999, the army has been involved with Swisscoy in the Kosovo peacekeeping mission Kfor (Kosovo Force), the multinational military formation set up in 1999 under the leadership of NATO after the end of the Kosovo war.

In June 2023, Parliament extended the Swisscoy mission until the end of 2026.
