German speaking countries want to achieve more in the areas of immigration and the fight against organized crime together. Justice Minister Beat Jans emphasised this after the meeting with ministerial colleagues from Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.

Discussions included the opportunities and challenges of accepting refugees from Ukraine and dealing with irregular migration, as Federal Councillor Jans’ Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) announced on Monday.

In all German-speaking countries combined, around one and a half million refugees from Ukraine have sought protection so far. It was assumed that these people would soon be able to return home. More than two years later, however, it is impossible to predict how the Russian war against Ukraine will develop.

According to the FDJP, Switzerland is relying on the so-called dual-intent approach of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD): it wants to promote the integration of refugees from Ukraine and at the same time maintain their ability to return.

Head of the FDJP Jans also exchanged views with his ministerial colleagues on how to deal with irregular migration. Speaking to the media, the participants emphasised the importance of increased cooperation and a credible Dublin system.

Switzerland hosted this year’s meeting of the interior ministers of the German-speaking countries. Federal Councillor Jans had invited them to his home town of Basel for working discussions.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and her Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner, Liechtenstein’s Deputy Prime Minister Sabine Monauni and Luxembourg’s Interior Minister Léon Gloden took part.
