In a disturbing case unfolding in Lucerne, a 43-year-old man stands accused of attempting to murder his ex-wife in April 2021.

The trial, which commenced today at the Lucerne Criminal Court, involves charges of him setting his ex-wife on fire and subsequently stabbing her multiple times.

According to the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office, the attack began when the accused sprayed his ex-wife with a can of brake cleaner and ignited it with a lighter, causing her jacket and hair to catch fire.

Despite her dire situation, the victim managed to extinguish the flames in the bathroom and contacted the police. However, the assailant persisted, attempting to set fire beneath the bathroom door and forcibly entering to snatch her cell phone.

The confrontation escalated when the woman tried to flee to the front door, where the accused caught up with her and repeatedly stabbed her with a knife.

The woman sustained several defensive wounds before the police arrived and subdued the attacker.

The couple had been separated since 2019, and on the night of the attack, the accused had premeditatedly brought the brake cleaner and knife, waiting at the woman’s apartment.

Their son, present at the time, texted his mother who immediately left a birthday party to return home. She walked into the ambush, while their son managed to escape.

He denied stabbing her, suggesting he wanted to discuss unresolved issues regarding a shared property in Serbia.

Despite these claims, the prosecutor is demanding an 8-year prison sentence, inpatient psychiatric treatment, and a 15-year ban from Switzerland, highlighting his diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and previous violent behaviour, including an escape attempt and assaulting two police officers.

The presumption of innocence remains, as the court continues to review the harrowing details of this case.
