Shaping Policy and Probing Scandals: A National Council Member’s Journey

Paul Günter, former National Councillor and chief physician in Bern, has died at the age of 80. Günter was initially politically active in the National Association of Independents and, after its dissolution, in the SP.

Günter died on January 10 after a long illness, his family announced on Friday. The Bernese physician was head of anesthesia at Interlaken Regional Hospital.

He was also the founder of the Bernese Oberland private radio station Radio BeO. As Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of the Friends’ Association, he campaigned for the station for many years.

Paul Günter’s Career

Günter was also drawn to politics at a young age. From 1972 to 1979, he was a member of the cantonal parliament of Bern and from 1979 a member of the National Council. In the Grand Chamber, he represented the interests and goals of the then National League of Independents (LdU) party until 1991.

From 1995 until 2007, he was a politician for the SP in the National Council. Among other things, he was a member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK) into the cache scandal.

Günter was always keen to help people and thus improve their living conditions both in Switzerland and in his projects abroad.
