Updated at 29 Mar 2024 4:00 am

More than 20 people were injured in a bus accident on highway 44 in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday night. According to a police spokesperson, the coach with around 60 passengers, which left the road near Werl and crashed onto its side, was carrying pupils from a vocational college in Warburg on the border with Hesse. They were on their way back from a trip to England. The students were young adults.

The police spokesman initially spoke of 21 slightly injured and one seriously injured person. Later, the control center in Dortmund spoke of 20 lightly injured and one seriously injured person. They agreed that no one's life was in danger. The driver of the bus was reportedly uninjured. The cause of the accident is still being investigated, but according to initial findings, no other vehicles were involved.

The accident happened in the direction of Kassel. As a result, one side of the A44 was closed from the Unna Ost exit to Werl. The closure is likely to continue for several hours, said the police spokesman in the early morning. The bus had to be righted before it could be rescued. In addition to the fire department, a rescue helicopter was also deployed.

It was only on Wednesday morning that a serious accident occurred on the A9 near Leipzig when a coach with 54 passengers on its way from Berlin to Zurich left the road and crashed onto its side. Four women died, six other people were seriously injured and 29 were slightly injured. As far as is known, no other vehicles were involved in this accident either. The bus driver is being investigated on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent bodily injury.

In recent years, there have been a number of serious coach accidents in Germany. Nevertheless, coaches are a relatively safe means of transportation. According to accident statistics, they are comparatively rarely involved in road accidents with personal injury.
