Avalanche victim from Saas-Grund VS was 61-year-old German

The skier who died in an avalanche last Saturday in Saas-Grund in Valais was a 61-year-old German. He lived in the canton of Zurich, as the Valais cantonal police announced on Thursday.

The deceased skier was on a slope traverse in the Kreuzboden-Hohsaas ski area when an avalanche broke loose on a slope above the Hohsaas mountain restaurant. Rescue workers located him under a snow cover of around one meter. Despite resuscitation attempts, he died at the scene of the accident.

Last weekend, at least two people lost their lives in avalanches in the Swiss Alps.
