Campsite in Sion VS evacuated due to fire

Updated at 03 Mar 2024 11:30 am

The Sedunum campsite in Sion VS was evacuated on Sunday morning due to a fire. A fire broke out there at around 08:30. The fire was extinguished by midday. A member of the fire department was injured in the process, as the Valais cantonal police announced on Sunday afternoon via X, formerly Twitter.

Persistent wind made it difficult for the fire department to extinguish the fire. "A mobile home caught fire for reasons that are still unknown. The wind caused the fire to spread to other mobile homes," said Daniel Imboden, spokesman for the Valais cantonal police, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

There were no injured campers, Imboden continued. The campsite had been closed during the winter months. It should reopen on March 13.

"The aim is to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible, but it is very windy today," Imboden continued. The police are advising the public to avoid the area so as not to hinder the fire-fighting efforts.
