Most cantons in Switzerland did not use their budget to reduce health insurance premiums in the past year, according to a Swiss Trade Union (SGB) analysis for 2022 premiums. 21 cantons could have provided more funds to insured people in 2022, but 10 cantonese reduced their premium subsidies in the last 10 years. The federal government has increased its contribution to reduced premiums annually, but the cantons have not had a similar obligation. This has resulted in cantonal contributions to reduced premiums varying significantly compared to the federal contributions. The SGB criticised the cantons for their reduction policy, which they have tried to disguise. In 2000, 12.4% of basic insurance was financed by reduced premiums, but by 2020 this had dropped to 7.6%, a decrease of almost 40%. At the same time, the premium burden for relevant households had more than doubled from 6.5% to 14%. If all the budgeted funds for premium reductions had been used in 2022, an additional 234 million Swiss francs would have been paid out, an increase of 9%.nnnnnnnnnnnn
