Cultural Economy in Important Sectors Behind the Overall Economy

The culture industry in Switzerland is slowly recovering from the pandemic, but remains behind the overall economy in key indicators. According to figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) on Tuesday, the value added of the cultural sector has declined three times more than in the overall economy due to the pandemic. In 2021, the value added of the cultural sector rose to 15.2 billion Swiss francs, but remained below the pre-corona level. Furthermore, this increase of 3.5 percent was significantly lower than the growth in the overall economy; the GDP increased by 5.4 percent from 2020 to 2021. The number of employees in the cultural sector also lags behind the overall economy: in full-time equivalents, the number of employees increased by one percent from 2020 to 2021; in the overall economy it was two percent.

The most notable growth was in the audiovisual and multimedia sector, while the number of companies in the book and press sector decreased by 1.5 percent. This shows that the recovery has mainly affected small structures, as the number of companies in the cultural sector has increased more than in the overall economy and even exceeded the pre-pandemic level. In 2021, there were around 65,000 cultural companies in Switzerland, more than a thousand more than in the previous year.

The cultural economy statistics describe the economic aspects of culture. In addition to the typical cultural areas, it also includes those in which creativity plays a special role, such as architecture, video games or advertising.nn
