Denner now gives unsold meat to Caritas stores

The discounter Denner has joined forces with Caritas to save meat from being thrown away. Denner now freezes unsold, tested meat and the Caritas stores then sell it cheaply to people living in poverty.

To prevent the meat from ending up as waste, Denner freezes it in its own stores when it reaches the expiration date, according to a statement on Thursday. This means it remains edible for a further 90 days.

Caritas Markt employees then collect it on their weekly rounds. It is then sold on as frozen goods in the Caritas Markt stores. Caritas Market offers the meat in its own stores at a discount of 66 percent.

According to the information provided, the project is currently being implemented in 15 Denner stores. Following the successful pilot phase, it will be expanded to 140 stores throughout Switzerland by the end of the year, with a focus on the regions of Zurich and Lucerne, Geneva and Lausanne as well as Winterthur, Bern and St. Gallen.

The project is financed by income. Thomas Künzler, Managing Director of the Caritas-Markt cooperative, describes the collaboration between the partners as an "important step in the fight against food waste".
