Fatal Accident on Eiger: Mountaineer Plunges to Death

On Friday afternoon, a mountaineer tragically died while climbing the Eiger. He was apparently climbing alone on the West Ridge of the 3967 meter high mountain when he fell for reasons yet to be determined, according to the Bern Cantonal Police on Sunday. The alpinist fell several hundred meters into the depths, according to the statement. He could only be recovered dead. The authorities have "concrete indications" regarding the identity of the deceased, according to their own statements. However, the formal identification is still pending, the public prosecutor's office announced. Investigations to clarify the cause of the accident have been initiated. The Swiss authorities deployed a range of specialist resources to respond to the incident, including mountain specialists from the Cantonal Police of Bern, helicopters from Air-Glaciers and Rega, and a specialist from the Swiss Alpine Rescue.
