Federal Court Finds Former Town Clerk of Frauenfeld Guilty

The Federal Court has confirmed the verdict of the lower courts against the former town clerk of Frauenfeld. During the cantonal elections in March 2020, he is alleged to have manipulated the results with falsified ballots. The Federal Court rejected the appeal of the former town clerk, as stated in the judgment published on Friday. Thus, the Federal Court followed the lower courts. The Thurgau courts sentenced the man to twelve months' imprisonment for qualified electoral fraud. According to the Federal Court's judgment, the accused pleaded not guilty. He always denied the accusations and raised doubts about the evidence against him. However, the Federal Court concluded in its judgment: "The indictment is free from arbitrariness". Due to errors in the counting, the SVP initially won an additional seat in the Frauenfeld district at the expense of the Green Liberals (GLP). At the insistence of the GLP due to their unusually low voter turnout in the city of Frauenfeld, the election was reviewed. During a recount, the former town clerk is said to have recognized the error and destroyed around 100 unchanged GLP ballots and replaced them with SVP ballots taken from the remaining election documents in order to cover up the original error in the counting in his polling station so that there would be no seat shift. In July 2020, the Thurgau Grand Council corrected the seat distribution in favour of the GLP.nnnnnnnnnn
