Fire extinguished at campsite in Sion VS

The Sedunum campsite in Sion VS was evacuated on Sunday morning due to a fire. A member of the fire department was slightly injured. He was taken to hospital. The fire was brought under control in the late morning, according to the Valais cantonal police on Sunday afternoon.

There were no injuries to campers, said Daniel Imboden, spokesman for the Valais cantonal police, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. Three mobile homes were damaged in the fire.

The campsite had been closed during the winter months. It was due to reopen on March 13. Nevertheless, around 50 people were affected by the evacuation order.

According to the Valais police, the fire broke out on Sunday morning at around 08.30 a.m. for as yet unknown reasons. Persistent winds made it difficult for the fire department to extinguish the fire. "A mobile home caught fire for as yet unknown reasons. The wind caused the fire to spread to other mobile homes," continued the spokesperson for the Valais cantonal police.
