Indoor swimming pool or cultural center: a tightrope walk for the Basel Musical Theater

On Tuesday (today), a new production of the classic "West Side Story" premieres at the Musical Theater Basel. For all we know, this could be one of the last big events in this theater. This is because it is threatened with conversion into an indoor swimming pool.
With the idea of placing an indoor swimming pool in the building shell of the Musical Theater, the Basel government wants to kill two birds with one stone. It would get rid of the unloved theater that it has taken over from the financially ailing trade fair organizer MCH Group; and it would meet the decades-old demand for an indoor swimming pool with a 50-metre pool.
However, there is resistance to these plans. Among other things, a popular initiative to save the theater has been launched. However, a timely vote is not possible, as the government has requested permission from the Grand Council to be consulted on the content of the initiative - which will delay the project by months.
