Nemo represents Switzerland with “The Code” at the ESC in Malmö

Switzerland is sending Nemo to Malmö for this year's Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). This was announced by Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) on Thursday. "The Code" is the name of the English-language song with which Nemo will be competing.

"It is an incredible honor to be able to represent Switzerland at the ESC", Nemo was quoted as saying in the press release. The music competition, this year in Sweden, offers a huge opportunity to build bridges between different cultures and generations. It is important for Nemo to "stand up for the entire LGBTQIA+ community as a genderqueer person", the statement continued. Nemo is non-binary.

The song "The Code" deals with Nemo's journey, which began with the realization that Nemo was neither a man nor a woman. "The path to finding myself was a long and often difficult process for me," says Nemo. One line of the song is also called "Somewhere between the 0s and 1s, that's where I found my kingdom come". Somewhere between the 0s and 1s, that's where I found my kingdom come" - a reference to Nemo's struggle with his own gender identity.

Fusion of different genres

"The Code" combines rap, drum 'n' bass and elements of opera. The fusion of different genres also builds musical bridges. Nemo wrote the song in 2023 as part of the ESC songwriting camp.

Nemo Mettler was born in Biel in 1999 and launched his music career with dialect rap. Songs such as "Ke Bock" and "Du" made it into the Swiss charts. In 2018, Nemo won four Swiss Music Awards. Nemo now lives in Berlin and makes music in English.

The entry was selected in a multi-stage process involving an international audience jury and an expert jury. Musicians were able to submit their songs in advance.

Nemo will compete in the semi-finals on May 9, with the final of the 68th ESC taking place on May 11. Switzerland has qualified for the final in each of the past four editions, most recently with Remo Forrer.
