The road into the Glarner Sernftal will not need to be closed for the construction of an emergency bridge in Schwanden after all. The foundation of the bridge into the area destroyed by a landslide could be built much faster than expected. The road closure in the Glarner Sernftal was planned to last a maximum of four nights, so that the Swiss Army could "expeditiously construct the bridge", the responsible municipality of Glarus Süd announced on Tuesday. The valley with the villages of Engi, Matt and Elm would have been cut off from the outside world from 4 to 8 October from 7 pm to midnight without any possibility of detour. Thanks to the quick work of all involved, the army can now choose an installation method that will also lead to significant time savings. Compared to the originally chosen method, this method also requires less space. The bridge that will reconnect the cut-off residential and commercial buildings will be completed in the coming days. In late August, two landslides in the area of "Wagenrunse" near Schwanden GL completely destroyed half a dozen buildings. Further buildings were damaged. Around 100 people had to be evacuated. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
