Over 100 millimeters of rain in Ticino in two days

In the higher regions of Ticino and on the Simplon Pass, over 100 millimetres of rain have fallen since Good Friday night. The weather service Meteonews predicted that this amount of rain could fall again in the south of Switzerland by Easter Monday.

As Meteonews reported on Sunday, the Robiei TI measuring station at almost 1900 meters above sea level recorded the most precipitation, namely 115 millilitres between 00:00 on 29 March and 07:00 on Easter morning.

In Bosco/Gurin TI, the precipitation reached 113 millimetres, in Simplon-Dorf VS 103 millimetres. In Airolo TI it was 82 millimetres and in Locarno-Monti 62 millimetres.

As the precipitation fell as snow at higher altitudes, the federal government warned of a high avalanche risk in the Alpine valleys of Ticino and certain regions of Valais and the south of Graubünden on Easter Sunday. There is a considerable avalanche risk in numerous other valleys.

However, according to the federal government's natural hazard portal, there is no or only a low risk of flooding throughout Switzerland.

As on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, various transport services were interrupted due to the weather on Easter Sunday. In the Jungfrau region, for example, certain trains did not run due to strong winds, as reported by the rail information service Railinfo. The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway reported that the route between Andermatt UR and Tschamut-Selva GR would remain interrupted on Sunday.

In the Saas Valley VS, the main road between Stalden and Saas-Grund was still closed on Sunday morning due to the risk of avalanches. At midday, those responsible wanted to provide information on how long the closure would last.
