Senate Calls for Swift Action Against Doctor Shortage

The Swiss Senate has unanimously passed a motion calling on the Federal Council to take swift action to address the shortage of general practitioners and specialists in certain fields. The motion requires the Federal Council to work with the cantons and affected areas to explore all possible options and develop concrete proposals to ensure an adequate supply of general practitioners and specialists in all regions of Switzerland. The Federal Council is also asked to submit any necessary legislative changes to Parliament. The motion was proposed by Senator Charles Juillard, who noted that there has been a doctor shortage in Switzerland for several years, particularly in regions far from major urban centres. The motion aims to ensure that doctors who retire or leave their practice are replaced. It is not intended to increase the number of medical practices without restriction. Federal President and Health Minister Alain Berset assured the Senate that the Federal Council is willing to consider measures to address the issue, and that the cantons must be closely involved. In Switzerland, the organisation of the health system is the responsibility of the cantons.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
