The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen AG will temporarily shut down its Synchotron Light Source Switzerland (SLS) research facility for 15 months starting Saturday. The shutdown is necessary for an upgrade of the facility to bring it up to date for the scientific questions of the coming decades. The upgrade will be done under tight time constraints to minimise disruption to research activities. The SLS produces X-ray light for experiments in physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine. The upgrade will make the X-ray light brighter and focus it into a smaller diameter, allowing more samples to be examined in the same amount of time. Since its launch in 2001, the SLS has been used for 22,500 experiments and 53,000 external researchers have visited the facility.
