15 of the 218 productions envisioned have been selected for Swiss Dance Days 2024. The dance festival will take place from 28 February to 3 March in Zurich, as the organizers announced on Wednesday.
The Swiss Dance Days see themselves as an international promotion platform for the independent Swiss dance scene. Over a period of ten months, the choreographic work of the last two years in Switzerland was assessed, as the jury wrote in its statement. The result was a selection that "serves as an orientation aid in the diverse domestic dance scene."
The selection addresses the complex diversity and entanglement of our time. It also expresses both intimate and collective experiences, according to the organizers.
The program includes "Monkey off my back or the Cat's Meow" by Trajal Harrell, in-house director at Schauspielhaus Zürich, with the Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble. Also on the program: "Sacre!", directed by Teresa Vittucci and Annina Machaz with the ensemble from Theater Hora, the theater by and with people with cognitive disabilities. The production "Without References" by Cindy Van Acker will also be shown as a film. Van Acker is the winner of the Federal Office of Culture's Grand Prix Performing Arts 2023.
The productions at the twelfth edition of the festival will be shown at venues including the Rote Fabrik, Gessnerallee, Zurich Schauspielhaus and Zurich University of the Arts. As a platform for the independent dance scene, the Swiss Dance Days are aimed at organizers from Switzerland and abroad in order to provide companies and theater makers with new opportunities for exposure. At the same time, it is also intended to appeal to the general public in Switzerland.
The Swiss Dance Days were launched in 1996 and take place every two years at different locations, most recently in Basel in 2022.
