SBB Will Run More Trains Through the Gotthard from March

Wed, Feb 7th 2024

SBB trains boost Gotthard passage with weekend and early options, enhancing connectivity and seat availability for passengers.

Beginning in March, SBB is set to increase its train services through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, introducing seven additional passenger trains on weekends, on top of the current 31, and launching an early train from Ticino on weekdays starting March 25.

This expansion will see 38 new trains every weekend, with extra services on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons, offering 4,300 more seats. The early weekday train from Ticino to the German-speaking part of Switzerland is expected to cut travel time by about an hour, facilitating quicker commutes for passengers.

The Easter period will benefit from an additional 49 trains, providing approximately 49,000 extra seats along the Gotthard axis, primarily through the Base Tunnel. Despite previous plans for a more frequent service, an incident in August led to delays.

However, SBB reports that repair work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is progressing well, with significant milestones like replacing high-speed switches at the Faido station, aiming for a return to normal operations by September 2024.
