The EU Commission has welcomed the adoption of its negotiating mandate by the Council of the European Union. The Commission will keep its foot on the “gas pedal” in the negotiations with Switzerland.

This was announced by the Commission on Tuesday. The mandate confirms the EU’s interest in modernizing the partnership with Switzerland, Vice-President of the Commission Maros Sefcovic was quoted as saying.

With the upcoming negotiations, both parties could take a “historic step” for their relations.

The aim of the negotiations is to update and intensify relations between Switzerland and the EU, the Commission recalled.

In addition, an agreement should ensure a level playing field for companies operating in the single market and guarantee the protection of the rights of EU citizens in Switzerland.
